Ravens release running back Justin Forsett

The Baltimore Ravens have released running back Justin Forsett for the second time this season.

One of the most surprising final cuts from the Baltimore Ravens roster before the season was running back Justin Forsett. It turns out the Ravens did it so they could get other players to the roster. The Ravens quickly brought Forsett back a few days later. However, he has seen his role diminish with the Ravens. The Ravens have released him for the second time, according to Forsett.

This isn’t a total surprise, as Terrance West has taken over Forsett’s role as starting running back. West has done well in recent weeks, averaging 4.5 yards per carry against the Jacksonville Jaguars and getting 113 rushing yards with a touchdown against the Oakland Raiders. The Ravens have several young running backs who they like a lot. With 2016 fourth round pick Kenneth Dixon healthy, Forsett has been rendered surplus.

It shouldn’t take long for Forsett to find another job. He’s a quality running back who can thrive in a zone blocking scheme. Don’t be surprised if the Denver Broncos express interest in him, as he did very well in Gary Kubiak’s offense in 2014. Despite being over 30 years old, Forsett doesn’t have the mileage many running backs his age have, so his NFL career is hardly over. He still has some years left in him, but likely not as a starting running back.

With the Ravens, Forsett had 2,005 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in 29 games (27 starts). Forsett added 452 receiving yards. He saw his best season as a pro in 2014, when he rushed for 1,266 yards. With Forsett’s release, look for Dixon to start getting most of the carries. The Ravens are huge on him and he has the potential to be a versatile threat for the Ravens.
