Raiders' starting job could belong to a former Super Bowl hero

Malcolm Smith has learned to make the most out of what little starting chances he gets.

He did it in Seattle and became a Super Bowl MVP. He's doing it again with the Raiders at training camp after just 10 practices.

"He's a veteran player," head coach Jack Del Rio told ESPN. "He understands what we're trying to get done. He's got a knack for stripping the ball. He seems to come up with turnovers almost every day."

In short, he's Del Rio's dream linebacker. Not too shabby for a player penciled in as a reserve when he signed in Oakland.

Normal starter Sio Moore (hip) still faces questions about his availability. That leaves more time for Smith to show what he can bring.

"I'm really excited about the way he's working at it, applying himself," Del Rio said. "He's been very good for us."
