Philadelphia Eagles trade Eric Rowe to New England Patriots

The Philadelphia Eagles have traded Eric Rowe.

Less than a year ago, Eric Rowe was one of the Philadelphia Eagles‘ best young defensive backs. Now he’s headed to New England after being thrown into Doug Pederson‘s doghouse.

Rowe has been traded to the Patriots in exchange for offensive lineman Josh Kline and a conditional fourth round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

This trade should not come as much of a surprise. It was reported last month that the Eagles were not done making moves. Considering Howie Roseman’s aggressiveness as a trader, it’s actually surprising the Eagles haven’t made more moves.

Last season’s firing of Chip Kelly really caused Rowe’s standing in Philadelphia to take a hit. Kelly drafted Rowe in the second round of last year’s draft and had big plans for him in his secondary. When Kelly was sent packing, so was Rowe’s biggest supporter. It does not seem Pederson is a fan of Rowe as a cornerback, especially considering Rowe’s major decrease of snaps this summer.

As for what the Eagles got in return, Josh Kline is a solid interior lineman with starting experience. In Philadelphia, however, he will likely be Allen Barbre‘s backup at left guard. Philadelphia also continues to do a nice job replenishing the picks used to trade up and select Carson Wentz in this year’s draft.

With a highly drafted player like Rowe being moved, it’s hard not to wonder whether Nelson Agholor could also be on the trading block. Agholor has been nothing short of abysmal since being drafted by the Eagles last year and while it’s unfair to judge a player off of one season, it’s also not impossible to fall out of favor just as quickly.

Just ask Eric Rowe.
