Peterson is aiming for '2,500 yards' and a rushing title in 2015
Adrian Peterson made it abundantly clear Thursday that he has set some incredibly lofty, history-making goals for the 2015 season.
The Minnesota Vikings running back said he has his eyes on some serious prizes in his first season back playing football after missing essentially the entire 2014 campaign: winning his third rushing title and shattering the single-season rushing record.
“That’s one of my personal goals,” Peterson said, via the Pioneer Press. “I’m sitting here and talking about 2,500 yards (for the season) and I better get the rushing title. So that’s definitely one of my goals.”
Peterson took over the NFL lead in rushing yards (291) courtesy of his 20-carry, 126-yard performance in the Vikings’ victory over the San Diego Chargers last Sunday.
The arguably unrealistic goal of amassing 2,500 yards aside, should Peterson win his third rushing title this season, he would be only the eighth running back in NFL history to accomplish that feat and would become the second-oldest player ever to win one.
Peterson of course has always set superhuman goals for himself, and this isn’t the first time he has proclaimed he wants to rush for 2,500 yards in a season, which would obliterate the record 2,105 yards Eric Dickerson amassed in 1984. Peterson came up just short of breaking the single-season record during his MVP year in 2012, in which he rushed for 2,097 yards.
Still, the 30-year-old running back clearly is feeling a lot like his old self given how he continues to make boastful comments about his extreme talent and remarkable drive, attributes that have never been questioned. In light of his recent statement about his season goals, if he can make good on a bid for 2,500-yard rushing season -- an unlikely eventuality, even for Peterson -- he’s definitely assured of getting that third rushing title he so covets.
