Packers' Ty Montgomery reveals the illness that sidelined him Sunday

The Green Bay Packers’ outlook at running back continues to be a quickly moving target. One day after they entered a loss to the Falcons without wide-receiver-turned-top-running-option Ty Montgomery due to an illness, Montgomery disclosed what kept him out and the Packers reportedly cut backup Knile Davis.

Montgomery – who ran nine times for a team-high 60 yards a week earlier -- told reporters Monday that he missed the Atlanta game due to complications of the sickle cell trait. He said doctors told him that the condition is not career-threatening and that he may be able to play Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

The reason the Packers had been relying on Montgomery as a running back is because starter Eddie Lacy is on IR after ankle surgery and backup James Starks is recovering from a knee injury. That led Green Bay to trade for Davis from the Chiefs two weeks ago, but the team apparently didn’t like what it saw in his five carries for five yards over two games.

Following his release, Green Bay is down to one true running back on the roster, and that’s recent practice squad call-up Don Jackson. He has six carries for 16 yards in two games, so the Packers won’t have any running game to speak of unless Montgomery can get back on the field this weekend.
