Packers sign Wilkerson, acquire QB DeShone Kizer in trade

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) The Packers have signed free agent defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson and also acquired quarterback DeShone Kizer.

The team announced the moves a day after the opening of free agency.

Kizer was acquired in a trade with the Browns for cornerback Damarious Randall with drafts picks also involved.

Kizer is expected to serve as the backup to Aaron Rodgers. Kizer was selected by the Browns in the second round of the 2017 draft. He led the NFL with 22 interceptions, went 0-15 and went through numerous growing pains as a rookie starter.

Wilkerson was selected by the Jets in the first round of the 2011 draft. In seven seasons, he played in 105 regular-season games and had 498 tackles (324 solo), 44 sacks, two interceptions, 10 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery that he returned for a touchdown. In 2015, he earned a spot in the Pro Bowl after getting a career-best 12 sacks.

The Packers also signed cornerback Herb Waters. He was signed by Green Bay as an undrafted rookie out of Miami (Fla.) on May 6, 2016.
