Niners sign Dawson to replace Akers

San Francisco has replaced one of the NFL’s most accomplished kickers with another.

Phil Dawson announced on his Twitter account (@phil_dawson_4) that he has agreed to contract terms with the 49ers.

Dawson will be taking the place of David Akers, who was recently released after two seasons with San Francisco.

Dawson, 38, had spent his entire 14-year NFL career in Cleveland. Although he is 38 years old, Dawson made a career-high 93.5 percent of his field goals (29 of 31) in 2012.

Akers, 38, slumped last year after he didn’t sufficiently recover from offseason hernia surgery. Akers made only 69 percent of his field-goals during the regular season, missing on 13 of his 42 attempts.
