NFL will 'certainly' consider making officials full-time after this season

The NFL has had a bit of an officiating issue this season. It began with a handful of missed calls when Cam Newton was hit in the head multiple times in the season opener. Then, the league’s crackdown on player celebrations took center stage, and that was ultimately supplanted by last week’s debacle during the Bills-Seahawks game.

Some believe the NFL, which employs part-time officials, should make its referees full-time. The thought behind that idea is that it’ll cause officials to improve on game day, though that’s not certain to happen.

As it turns out, the NFL actually considered doing this – or at least discussed it – when the labor deal was originally signed a few years ago, according to FOX Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer. Those talks never went anywhere as the idea of making officials full-time was tabled.

When the league and its officials open talks on a new deal after this season, the discussion will once again be brought up, according to Glazer.

“Full-time officials will certainly be on the docket in those negotiations,” Glazer explains.
