2023 NFL trade deadline tracker: 49ers get Chase Young; Bills bolster secondary

Deadline day prompted a flurry of NFL trades Tuesday.

As teams tried to make one last move to either gear up for a Super Bowl run or recoup compensation on players with limited organizational futures, here are all the notable trades that took place ahead of the 4 p.m. ET deadline.

Oct. 31 trades

49ers bolster defensive line, trading for DE Chase Young

Key stats: Young has recorded 15 total tackles and five sacks this season for the Commanders in his first full season back from an ACL tear. He's eighth in the NFL with 38 pressures, per Pro Football Focus.

What else is involved: The Commanders are receiving a conditional third-round pick in exchange for Young, according to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer.

Why it matters: The 49ers arguably already have the league's best defensive line, but they haven't had stellar production this season. Their 18 sacks are tied for 18th in the league so far this season, so Young will certainly give the 49ers more depth at a valuable position. The Commanders, meanwhile, recoup another draft pick for a standout edge rusher on an expiring deal.

Bills acquire CB Rasul Douglas in trade with Packers

Key stats: Douglas has recorded an interception, six passes defended and 32 total tackles this season. He also has 15 interceptions over his seven-year career.

What else is involved: The Packers will receive a third-round pick for Douglas while giving up a fifth-round pick.

Why it matters: The Bills need significant help in their secondary after corner Tre'Davious White suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 4. Kaiir Elam, a 2022 first-round pick, hasn't played much either. The Packers, meanwhile, part ways with one of the most veteran players on the league's youngest roster. Douglas is under contract through the 2024 season.

Lions add WR Donovan Peoples-Jones from Browns

Key stats: Peoples-Jones has recorded eight receptions for 97 yards this season after he had a career-high 61 receptions for 839 yards and three touchdowns last year.

What else is involved: The Lions are giving the Browns a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft for Peoples-Jones.

Why it matters: Detroit hasn't received too much production outside its top two receivers this season. Only two of the Lions' receivers have recorded at least four targets per game this year.

Jaguars get G Ezra Cleveland from Vikings

Key stats: Cleveland started 45 consecutive games at left guard for the Vikings before a recent foot injury sidelined him for the last two games.

What else is involved: The Jaguars are sending the Vikings a sixth-round pick for Cleveland.

Why it matters: The Jaguars are looking to shore up their offensive line as they expect to make a deep playoff run this season. Meanwhile, the Vikings traded Cleveland as he's in the final year of his rookie contract. Dalton Risner has also filled in and produced in Cleveland's brief absence. FOX Sports NFC North writer Carmen Vitali questioned the move.

Vikings acquire QB Josh Dobbs from Cardinals

Key stats: Dobbs has completed 62.8% of his passes this season for 1,569 yards, eight TDs and five interceptions with 258 rushing yards and three rushing TDs.

Why it matters: The Vikings are getting a QB just two days after Kirk Cousins went down for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon. Dobbs filled in as the Cardinals' starting quarterback for the first half of the season with Kyler Murray still rehabbing from his torn ACL. While Murray isn't expected to return in Week 9, the Cardinals indicated Clayton Tune would start for them instead. Dobbs joins fifth-round rookie Jaren Hall as the only healthy quarterback on the Vikings' active roster.

Expert analysis: Just as the Minnesota Vikings looked like they were turning their season around, Kirk Cousins' season ended. In a way, the timing did Minnesota a favor with the trade deadline just two days away. It gave the Vikings time to figure out a contingency plan. Enter Josh Dobbs.

Arizona is getting Kyler Murray back from injury, which meant Dobbs' time under center in the desert was up. He now goes to float another team for the second half of the season. Minnesota gave up almost nothing to get Dobbs, with a reported pick swap of a sixth for a seventh and Dobbs. According to reports, the seventh is conditional and could turn into a sixth, as well. The Vikings will still have a decision to make at quarterback come the end of the season, but this allows them to get to that point without completely derailing the progress the Vikings are continuing to make during their "competitive rebuild." —Carmen Vitali

Bears swing a trade for Commanders DE Montez Sweat

Key stats: Sweat has recorded 32 total tackles, 6.5 sacks, 7.5 stuffs and two forced fumbles this season.

What else is involved: The Bears will send the Commanders a 2024 second-round pick.

Why it matters: The Bears get much-needed pass-rush help. Their 10 sacks this season are the fewest in the league as no one on their roster has more than two sacks through the first eight games. Meanwhile, the Commanders get draft-pick compensation for a player who's set to hit free agency this offseason.

Oct. 30 trades

Atlanta Falcons acquire DL Kentavius Street from Philadelphia Eagles

Key stats: Street has recorded four total tackles while playing just 17% of the Eagles' defensive snaps across eight games.

Who else is involved: Philly is sending a 2025 seventh-round pick with Street and is getting a 2024 sixth-round pick.

Why it matters: The Falcons lost defensive tackle Grady Jarrett to a season-ending knee injury Sunday, and Street is familiar and inexpensive depth. He played for Falcons defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen with the New Orleans Saints, logging 518 snaps last season. He won't play at Jarrett's level, but the drop-off isn't as glaring with Street there. Greg Auman

Seattle Seahawks acquire DT Leonard Williams from New York Giants

Key stats: Williams has recorded 21 total tackles with 1.5 sacks in seven games this season.

Who else is involved: The Giants will receive a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick from the Seahawks.

Why it matters: Seattle is loading up its defense after it improved to 5-2 and moved into first place in the NFC West on Sunday. Williams has been well-regarded as one of the league's best interior defensive linemen over the last few seasons, earning a three-year, $63 million contract with $45 million guaranteed during the 2021 offseason.
