NFL Rumors: Drew Brees seeking four-year $100 million deal
Drew Brees wants a four-year $100 million deal and he has no interest in negotiating during the season.
The New Orleans Saints have put themselves in an awkward situation with quarterback Drew Brees. New Orleans expected to sign the quarterback, who is a free agent after this season, to an extension during the offseason. However, the two sides have not been able to agree to a new deal. Brees is reportedly asking for a four-year deal worth over $100 million and he would prefer to avoid negotiating during the regular season.
Getting Brees signed should be a top priority for the Saints. Since joining the Saints in 2006, Brees has led the NFL in passing yards six times. He has thrown for at least 30 touchdowns in each of his past eight seasons and at least 4,600 yards in seven of his last eight. In ten seasons with the Saints, Brees has a 99.0 QB Rating. His QBR of 75.47 last season was among the league’s leaders.
Even though Brees is 37 years old, he is showing no signs of declining. He is still one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks and is deserving of a huge contract. The concern for the Saints has to be his age. How well will Brees age? Will he still be an elite quarterback in two or three years?
Brees’ importance to New Orleans does not stop on the football field. He is also very active in the community and famously assisted in rebuilding the city after hurricanes devastated the city. Brees is looking to help the Saints improve from a frustrating 2015 season, but he will need some help from his defense in order to do so. The Saints have to weigh if they are going to contend in the next two or three seasons. If they aren’t, it might be worthwhile to let Brees go and find his replacement.
