2024 Super Bowl odds: Breaking down 49ers-Chiefs matchup

FOX Sports NFL analyst David Helman has the Chiefs at the top of his Power Rankings.

"It's because of the magnitude of that win in Baltimore. To go on the road and just shush the Ravens the way they did, this is as impressive a performance as there's been all season. And having that guy No. 15 on your side helps as well."

In the most recent regular-season matchup between the two teams, the Chiefs beat the 49ers 44-23 on Oct. 23, 2022.

"It's going to be a great matchup," FOX Sports NFL analyst Michael Strahan said. "But I think both of these teams are in different places than they were when we saw the first matchup. I'm looking at Kansas City, in a lot of ways, being led more than their defense instead of their offense like the last time. And I think that the 49ers feel like they have some unfinished business."

For all the attention Patrick Mahomes, Brock Purdy and others receive, FOX Sports NFL analyst Bucky Brooks is focusing on the defenses.

"Despite the Chiefs' emergence as a defensive juggernaut this season, the unit's issues defending the run could encourage Kyle Shanahan to turn Super Bowl LVIII into a street fight in a phone booth," Brooks said. "The Niners not only excel at attacking opponents with an array of off-tackle runs with Christian McCaffrey running to daylight, but they find creative ways to put the ball in Deebo Samuel's hands on jet-sweeps or reverses on the perimeter."

Brooks said Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce should be the focal point for the San Francisco defense. Kelce has 23 catches for 262 yards and three touchdowns this postseason.

"To slow down the Chiefs' top offensive threat, Niners defensive coordinator Steve Wilks must play more man-to-man coverage with an extra defender assigned to Kelce," Brooks said. "Wilks cannot allow the perennial Pro Bowler to dominate the game by refusing to utilize double teams or bracket coverage to eliminate him from the progression."
