NFL, NFLPA reviewing handling of helmet-to-helmet hits on Cam Newton

The NFL and NFLPA announced Sunday that they will be investigating the handling of the helmet-to-helmet hits on Panthers quarterback Cam Newton during Carolina’s Thursday night loss to the Denver Broncos.

Newton took at least four helmet-to-helmet shots, but only one roughing-the-passer penalty was called. The other issue is whether the league’s concussion protocol was followed in leaving Newton on the field. He remained in the game despite appearing to be affected by the hits. The NFL released a statement Friday saying Newton was properly examined, but the NFLPA is exercising its right to have a neutral arbitrator review whether Newton was properly evaluated and cared for.
