Monte Kiffin offers counsel during Jags' defensive coordinator search

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley turned to a man with nearly 50 years of coaching experience for advice on choosing the team's new defensive coordinator.

Monte Kiffin, whose career spanned from 1966 to 2015 and included a long stretch as defensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, consulted with Bradley on Jacksonville's search for Bob Babich's replacement. Babich was fired Jan. 5 after three seasons with the team.

Via the Florida Times-Union:

“I know he has a track record of hiring very, very good defensive personnel. Mike Tomlin, Lovie Smith, Herm Edwards — the list goes on,” Bradley said.

If there were a second paragraph, it would go here.

That list includes, Bradley, who Kiffin brought to Tampa Bay in 2008. Kiffin last coached with the Dallas Cowboys in 2014, and doesn't have an official role with the Jaguars, but Bradley said his years of experience were a valuable resource.

“I put him on some things, some coaches to talk to and find out more information,” Bradley said. “Ultimately, I made the decision. But I just used him and visited with him about certain things in what I was looking to do. He wasn’t overbearing or anything. Most of the time, he just sat and listened and would ask a couple questions, but there were some good thoughts behind it.”.

Bradley and Jaguars promoted defensive line coach Todd Wash to replace Babich Jan. 22.
