The 2017 NFL draft is still trying to determine who its best quarterback prospect will be. One name is rising up the boards fast. It’s Mitch Trubisky.
Not a single person expected much out of the 22-year old when he assumed the starting job this year. It was his first season at the helm for North Carolina. The fourth-year junior was almost a complete unknown outside of the local community. Safe to say the rest of the nation is catching on quick. Through 111 games he’s completed 70 percent of his passes for 3,188 yards, 25 touchdowns and just four interceptions. The number of impressive plays is increasing every week.

The MMQB mentioned him in a recent article, stating they talked to a number of executives around the league, asking their opinions on him. Though they held off from any sort of gushing, the praise was fairly universal.
“Accurate, good vision, athletic, tough … I think he’s a Top 10 pick,” said one NFC exec. Another NFC exec echoed the sentiment in saying Trubisky has the “accuracy and overall arm talent” to go that high, with the only drawbacks being questions on experience and leadership. And the leadership question really centers on Trubisky being a little quieter than some would like, like Marcus Mariota and Teddy Bridgewater were.
It really is amazing how fast Trubisky has risen to national prominence. Much like Carson Wentz last year he came from obscurity due to a rather weak crop of senior and big conference quarterbacks. Now barring a huge meltdown for the final few weeks he looks like the early favorite to become the top quarterback in the 2017 draft class. This almost virtually guarantees he’ll be a top 10 pick. If he interviews well? Top 5.
Early comparisons liken him to names like Trent Green and Alex Smith. These are Pro Bowl players. Given the right situation he could join what is a growing crop of promsing young quarterbacks like Derek Carr, Marcus Mariota, and Jameis Winston who are challenging the old guard in the NFL.
