Lions CB Darius Slay on covering Antonio Brown in camp: 'He tried to kill me'
The Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers held a joint practice Tuesday, which is something several teams do at this point in training camp. With that came a marquee matchup on the outside featuring Lions cornerback Darius Slay and Steelers star wideout Antonio Brown.
As is the case for most cornerbacks lining up across from Brown, it was a long day for Slay. Brown got the better of the young corner, beating him on three consecutive go routes down the field. Brown uncharacteristically dropped one of the three passes, but there was little doubt who won that matchup.
"I'm killing him," Brown told one of his teammates, via the Detroit Free Press.
Slay didn't seem to disagree.
There isn't a single receiver in the game today who's tougher to match up against than Brown. Though he's not the biggest or most athletically gifted player in the NFL, his quickness and route-running ability is second to none.
Slay learned that the hard way in practice on Tuesday, as many have during the regular season, too. Slay is also a bigger corner, which makes it more difficult for him to get in and out of his cuts against the much quicker Brown.
The two will go at it again on Wednesday. Shortly thereafter, the Steelers will take on the Lions in their Friday preseason opener.
