LB Sam Barrington hopes to call signals for Green Bay Packers defense
Heading into his third NFL season, linebacker Sam Barrington wants to make a larger impact for the Green Bay Packers' defense. Ready to step out of a specialized role, Barrington told Packers senior writer Mike Spofford that he aims to be an every-down linebacker that calls the defensive signals.
"I kind of hope for it," said Barrington, via the Packers' official website. "If you’re going to do it, why not do it big? If you're going to be the guy in the middle, be the guy in the middle. Be an every-down linebacker.
"Be able to block somebody up man-to-man. When they put a receiver in the slot, don’t flinch. Play the receiver in the slot. When it’s time to make a big tackle on third-and-short, make that tackle. That’s just how I see it."
The Packers' plans at inside linebacker are still up in the air, but Barrington is a front-runner for one of the starting jobs. He began his breakout down the stretch last season, finishing with 45 tackles and a sack.
Can Barrington keep his run of success going in 2015?
"All Sam has to do is be himself, play to his skill set and improve, and he’ll be fine," linebackers coach Winston Moss told Packers.com.
