Landry Jones facing make-or-break year with Steelers

Landry Jones knows his time with the Steelers may be running out.

Entering his third NFL season, Jones has been unable to push Bruce Gradkowski as the team's main backup behind Ben Roethlisberger. If he doesn't show some promise this season, he may be be looking for a new team.

"This is an important year for me and my career," Jones told the Tribune-Review. "It's also important for my future on this team. I need to go out there and prove I'm capable of making plays."

Last year's third-stringer will need to fight off former Clemson QB Tajh Boyd for a roster spot. A former fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma, Jones failed to impress in the preseason last summer and has yet to throw a regular-season pass.

"(Landry) knows he's at a time when it's probably make-or-break time for him," said quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner. "Eventually, if there isn't a potential move forward, the younger guys will have to get some work."

Jones, who passed for over 16,000 yards as a four-year starter at Oklahoma, has struggled to get accustomed to the speed of the game at the NFL level, but he feels things are starting to slow down some.

"It used to feel as if bodies were flying around me that rookie year," Jones said. "So, I've definitely gotten used to the speed of the game."
