Kubiak shuns suitors, will remain with Ravens under Harbaugh

Given the choice to try to turn Jay Cutler or Geno Smith into a winner or keep riding with the one he's got, Gary Kubiak chose the latter. Even if it means a lower pay grade.

After rumors surfaced that Kubiak was on the Bears' and Jets' lists of potential head-coaching candidates, Kubiak on Sunday decided to remain as the Ravens' offensive coordinator.

“It is flattering and humbling to be invited to interview for a number of NFL head coaching positions, and I greatly appreciate these opportunities,” Kubiak said in a statement through the team. “But I have decided to stay with the Ravens.

“This is a special organization and we, like [Head] Coach [John] Harbaugh says, are building something great. I want to be a part of that and contribute in whatever ways I can.”

Kubiak, in his first season with Baltimore, guided the Ravens to a franchise record in points scored and helped quarterback Joe Flacco to perhaps the best statistical season of his seven-year career. Flacco set career highs in passing yards (3,986) and touchdown passes (27), while his 91.0 passer rating was the second-highest mark of his career. Flacco was also sacked just 19 times, a dozen fewer than his previous career low and 29 fewer than last season.

What's more, Baltimore returned to the playoffs a season after missing them and two seasons after Flacco led the Ravens to a victory in the Super Bowl with one of the greatest postseason runs by a quarterback in league history. This postseason, Flacco and the Ravens won at rival Pittsburgh in the wild-card round before losing at New England on Saturday, 35-31.

Kubiak coached the Houston Texans for eight years before joining the Ravens this season.
