Kent State wins Martin's finale

Assistant Jerry McManus has been named Kent State's interim head coach while the school searches for a successor for Doug Martin, whose resignation took effect after the Golden Flashes' season-ending upset of Ohio.

Athletics director Joel Nielsen said McManus, who served as an assistant head coach for the past six seasons, will fill Martin's spot until a new coach is hired.

Also, defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis, linebackers coach Jim Fleming and wide receivers coach Eugene Baker have been retained.

The four coaches will handle recruiting duties and day-to-day operations of the program as a national search is conducted to find the school's 20th coach.

Kent State went 5-7 in Martin's final season and 29-53 in his seven seasons overall.
