Joe Montana: Still a Steelers fan, almost became a Steeler
Joe Montana hasn't lived in Pennsylvania for over 40 years, but he's still true to his roots.
Montana was in Pittsburgh last weekend for an event commemorating the six Hall of Fame quarterbacks from western Pennsylvania. While he never got to play for the Steelers, he remains a fan of his boyhood team to this day.
"Everybody asks me if I am a 49ers fan or a Chiefs fan," Montana told the Tribune-Review. "I watch both of them and like both of them, but I grew up a Steelers fan. Once you are a Steelers fan, it is hard to get that out of your blood. I am also a big Roethlisberger fan. I really like Ben. He will be in that Hall of Fame someday."
As for playing for his hometown team, Montana revealed in a 2012 interview with Dan Patrick that he was open to the possibility when the 49ers were shopping his services back in 1993. Instead, he ended up in Kansas City because Pittsburgh was comfortable with Neil O'Donnell at quarterback.
O'Donnell did end up guiding the Steelers to the Super Bowl the season after Montana retired, but it's always fun to think about what could've been if Montana finished his career in Pittsburgh.
