Jets WR Jeremy Kerley calls himself 'quarterback's best friend'

The New York Jets were without wide receiver Eric Decker on Sunday which led to just four receivers being active against the Philadelphia Eagles. One of those receivers was Jeremy Kerley, who's found himself at the bottom of the depth chart this season.

Kerley caught six passes on Sunday -- his first of the season -- for 33 yards and touchdown, and he's now ready to see more action.

After the game, Kerley lobbied for more playing time in the future as he made his pitch to the coaching staff and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

"I feel like I am a quarterback’s best friend," Kerley said via Rich Cimini of ESPN. "I don't know, that's how I feel. I just feel like I move differently than everybody else out on the field."

Kerley sees his best trait as being able to separate and get open. Being primarily a slot receiver, Kerley isn't going to make big plays down the field -- as showed by his 5.5 yards per catch.

"Everybody is different, everybody brings different talents to the game," Kerley said. "I feel like my intangible is my ability to create separation and that is at the line of scrimmage. I don’t try to play outside myself. I know how to play within myself and use what I have to my advantage."

Kerley saw his playing time decrease in training camp and the preseason with the emergence of Quincy Enunwa and Chris Owusu, as well as rookie Devin Smith. That trend carried over to the regular season, too.

Smith made his NFL debut on Sunday and caught three passes for 39 yards, and should see an increased role as the season goes on. Of course, that could lead to a decrease in snaps for Kerley once again -- especially when Decker gets back and healthy, as well.
