Jets will release former Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis

The New York Jets are cutting ties with former Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis, the team announced Tuesday.

Revis has spent eight of his 10 years in the league with the Jets, being named to seven Pro Bowls. But the 31-year-old cornerback had a down year in 2016, allowing the highest passer rating in coverage among players targeted at least 75 times.

The Jets possibly could recoup some of the $6 million they owed him in guarantees.

“Darrelle Revis is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Jets uniform,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said, via the team’s website. “His combination of talent, preparation and instincts is rare and helped him become one of the most dominant players of his generation. I appreciate Darrelle’s contributions to this organization and, wherever his career takes him, his home will always be here with the Jets.”

During his prime, Revis was one of the best cover corners in the league. In 2009, he recorded a career-high six interceptions and added a league-best 31 passes defended while covering some of the NFL's most explosive receivers.

Revis was arrested and charged with four felonies stemming from an altercation in Pittsburgh earlier this month.

Revis, who was drafted 14th overall by the Jets in 2007, also helped the Patriots win Super Bowl XLIX over the Seahawks in a thriller.
