Jets sign RB Grimes from Texans' practice squad

The New York Jets signed running back Jonathan Grimes from the Houston Texans' practice squad.

The move Tuesday gives the Jets' struggling running game some added depth behind starter Shonn Greene and backups Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight.

The Jets also signed cornerback Donnie Fletcher to their practice squad, a day after waiving him from the active roster.

Grimes was signed by the Texans as an undrafted free agent out of William & Mary in May and waived after the preseason before being signed to Houston's practice squad.

He left William & Mary as the school's career leader with 4,541 yards rushing, 7,955 all-purpose yards, 2,289 kickoff return yards and 936 rushing attempts. Grimes also earned 11 all-conference honors during his career, the most in Colonial Athletic Association history.
