Jets should trade Geno Smith immediately
At one point with the New York Jets, quarterback Geno Smith looked like their franchise quarterback but it just hasn’t panned out as envisioned. They should trade him immediately now while teams are desperate for an experienced quarterback.
The headlines for most of the offseason was whether quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick would re-sign or not to be the starting quarterback of the New York Jets. The way the offseason was going, it seemed like he wasn’t going to, until finally just after training camp started they were able to strike a deal. Although I’m not confident Fitzpatrick will have the same year as he did in 2015, I prefer him over quarterback Geno Smith by a wide margin.
The Jets selected Smith with the 39th pick in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. To many, it looked like the end of the Mark Sanchez era and the start of the Smith era. Smith’s first season with the Jets didn’t go as smooth as many thought.
That year, the Jets finished 4-12 and missed the NFL Playoffs once again. Smith was supposed to be the starter in 2015 but as we know the infamous IK Enemkpali incident took place and Smith was punched which ended up breaking his jaw. In that offseason, the Jets acquired Fitzpatrick for a late-round pick and he was supposed to simply be a veteran backup solely for insurance.
When the season started not much was expected once again but Fitzpatrick surprised everyone with the Jets finishing 10-6, sadly still missing the playoffs. With this season, it seemed Smith had no place on the team besides being a backup. Smith only played one game in 2015 and struggled. So it’s clear Fitzpatrick will start but who should be his backup?

Quite honestly, it needs to be quarterback Bryce Petty.
He should be the quarterback of the future with Fitzpatrick only signing a one-year deal.
Plus Petty has had a very strong preseason to this point while Smith has once again struggled.
The preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles proved how bad Petty wants to deliver and be groomed to one day be the franchise quarterback of the Jets.
Sure, he got injured but it was after showing his pocket presence and scoring a touchdown. So with that being said, Smith really seems like the odd man out. The Jets need to find a team to trade him to and at this point in time, plenty could use someone like Smith to give him a fresh start.
The kind of team that is looking for a starting quarterback or even a backup that can step in and run an offense. Teams like the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, and even the Denver Broncos could use a quarterback like Smith.
As long as it enables Petty to continue being groomed the right way as he’s a better option than Smith, it would benefit the Jets to get a trade done before the regular season. They could get a draft pick or at the very least a decent offensive lineman or defensive back and rid the team of disgruntled quarterback who will more than likely leave next offseason anyway.
At least with a trade, they can get something back in return and also give Smith a fresh start in a new market and team to possibly resurrect his career. The Jets messed up big time when they didn’t develop him the right way but it’s time to part ways and focus on the future with Petty.
