Jameis: Tilt with Cowboys will be 'the greatest game'
Jameis Winston told Dallas reporters during a conference call Wednesday that he is especially eager for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ showdown with the Cowboys on Sunday, saying he expects it to be “the greatest game.” But curiously, from the perspective of the rookie No. 1 overall pick, that only means it will be exactly like every other game in which he’s played.
“Every game, to me, is the greatest game,” said Winston, who grew up an Eagles fan and has family members who root for the Cowboys, via The Dallas Morning News. “The next game is always the biggest game. … So, it’s going to be big game no matter what.”
The Buccaneers enter the game with the 2-6 Cowboys at Raymond James Stadium with a record of 3-5. As expected out of a raw, young quarterback, Winston has had an up-and-down rookie campaign, completing 57.7 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns and 7 interceptions for a 84.0 QB rating.
But he has played much better of late, throwing four touchdowns and no interceptions and tacking on two rushing touchdowns in the past four weeks while leading the team to a 2-2 record. Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith called Winston “as good as advertised” and praised his recent performances, saying he’s “played outstanding ball” over the last four weeks.
Speaking to his sometimes fast-and-loose approach, one typified by him going airborne on a rushing touchdown during last Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants, Winston says that’s simply part of his makeup.
“Anything that I can do to compete or try to win, I will do it,” he said. “And the coaches, they say stop, but during the game when the competitive nature comes out, it just comes out.”
