Improving Landry Jones may get starting nod Sunday night
Before camp opened, it seemed Landry Jones would have to scratch and claw to keep his spot on the Steelers roster with Tajh Boyd nipping at his heels. Suddenly, Jones may even be pushing Bruce Gradkowski for the No. 2 job.
With Gradkowski on the shelf, and Ben Roethlisberger getting extra rest due to the extended camp because of the Hall of Fame game, Jones has gotten a lot of reps with the team's top receivers. His results have dramatically improved, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
"The last couple practices I’ve been having some pretty good days," Jones said. "I just have to keep it going and make that kind of what I do, make it consistent."
If you don't want to take Bouchette's word for it, you'll likely get a good chance to see Jones with your own eyes Sunday night in prime time. Head coach Mike Tomlin has no need to play Ben Roethlisberger, leaving Jones as the best available option to start against the Vikings.
"Ben’s been healthy and Bruce has been healthy and so this is kind of the chance to go out there and show what I have," Jones added.
Don't expect the Steelers' top unit to stay out too long with Jones on Sunday night, but at the very least we'll be able to see if things are starting to click for the former Oklahoma quarterback in his third season.
