Groups get $300,000 grants for concussion research

NEW YORK (AP) Sixteen organizations are receiving $300,000 each for research on better diagnosing and treating mild traumatic brain injury.

The NFL and GE announced Thursday the winners of the first stage of the $20 million ''Head Health Challenge.'' Up to six of the groups will receive an additional $500,000 next year.

The winners were selected from more than 400 entries from 27 countries.

The league has been under pressure for its handling of concussions, with thousands of former players filing suit. A federal judge has yet to approve a proposed $765 million settlement. The NFL's past donations for concussion-related research include a $30 million grant to the National Institutes of Health.
