GM Dorsey: We think our rookie ILBs will provide some speed
Derrick Johnson is coming off surgery. And it seems like the Chiefs have been searching for his running mate on the inside of K.C.'s defense forever.
The search might be over after general manager John Dorsey took two inside guys in last weekend's draft. Dorsey thinks both Ramik Wilson and D.J. Alexander represent speedier options for the Chiefs going forward.
"I think the one thing we like to do is we like to try to see if we can get some speed at that position," Dorsey said. "The game has changed a little bit. I think the one thing that these guys can do is they can run to the football, which is good."
The spot might be open, but both rookies will have to prove they're starting material. Special teams play will be crucial for Wilson and Alexander as they acclimate to the speed of the pro game.
No one knows that better than Dorsey.
“I think they also add and help (special teams coach) Dave Toub in the special teams compartment of the team," he said. "Again, not only does that help give you depth, but it also gives you a guy who can play special teams as Dave likes to say, in four phases, and can run a little bit."
