Free agent CB Phillip Buchanon signs with Redskins

Free agent cornerback Phillip Buchanon has signed with the Redskins.

Washington becomes the fifth team in nine seasons for the 2002 first-round draft pick. He spent last year with Detroit, playing in 13 games with no interceptions.

Buchanon has also played for Oakland, Houston and Tampa Bay. He has 18 career interceptions, returning five of them for touchdowns.

DeAngelo Hall and Carlos Rogers are the projected starters at cornerback for the Redskins, although Rogers has struggled at times to stay on the field because of inconsistency.

Buchanon can also return punts, and the Redskins were 30th in return average last season.
