Eric Ebron's injury could make a bad Lions TE situation much worse

The Detroit Lions are already thin at the tight end position, and things might have gotten much worse during the team’s intrasquad scrimmage Saturday at Ford Field.

Starting tight end Eric Ebron suffered an injury to his lower right leg and was carted off the field after spending several minutes on the ground clutching the back of that leg, according to the Detroit Free Press. He was blocking on a running play when he was hurt.

Coach Jim Caldwell declined comment about Ebron after the scrimmage, but NFL Network is reporting that early indications are that it's an Achilles' injury.

Ebron, the 10th overall pick in the 2014 draft, has yet to live up to that status, but he did have 47 catches for 537 yards and five TDs last season. The Lions’ Nos. 2 and 3 tight ends, Brandon Pettigrew and Tim Wright, also are injured. Pettigrew is on the physically unable to perform list after tearing his ACL last season, and Wright is out for the year after tearing his ACL in minicamp.

Without Ebron, the team would be down to veteran journeymen Matthew Mulligan and Orson Charles and two undrafted free agents at the position.
