Emmitt Smith: DeMarco Murray could have had 2,500 yards in 2014

After a potentially extensive offseason analysis period, Emmitt Smith has decided that the Dallas Cowboys will be fine without DeMarco Murray. When looking at the game tape, 1,845 rushing yards was 655 yards short of what Murray should have compiled, according to Smith.

“When I think about DeMarco Murray, he has his own talent but when I was watching him run last year, and this is just me evaluating, I saw some opportunities there that was left on the football field where he could've had 2,500 yards, but he maximized what he had and he did the best with what he had,” Smith said Monday, in an interview transcribed by the Dallas Morning News.

Eric Dickerson's 2,105 rushing yards during the 1984 season are the most by any back in any single season. No longer a member of the Cowboys, a behind that oft-mentioned offensive line, Murray may never again have the opportunity to top Dickerson's record by nearly 400 yards.
