Eagles release QB Chase Daniel a year after signing him to $21 million deal

The Philadelphia Eagles released quarterback Chase Daniel on Monday, a year after the club signed the 30-year-old quarterback to a three-year, $21 million deal.

“Chase’s professionalism and intelligence were valuable assets to our quarterback room,” Eagles GM Howie Roseman said in a statement. “His veteran leadership was incredibly helpful in Carson [Wentz’s] development as a rookie, and his familiarity with Coach [Doug] Pederson’s offense was instrumental in installing our system last season.

“After a healthy discussion with Chase, we both felt like it was best to move forward in a different direction as circumstances have changed since he originally signed.”

Daniel appeared in only two games with the Eagles last season, completing his only attempt. The veteran quarterback might have assumed he would get more game action last season after Philadelphia drafted Wentz with the No. 2 pick. But the team opted to start the rookie from the outset, leaving little opportunity for Daniel.

The Eagles reportedly added offset language in Daniel’s contract, allowing the team to get some cap relief on his $7 million base salary for 2017.

Daniel has started just two games and has thrown one touchdown during his seven-year career.
