Eagles Notes: Eagles' bad luck with injuries continues

SAN FRANCISCO - The Eagles continued a run of bad luck with injuries, as left tackle Jason Peters, defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley, and Trent Cole all left Sunday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Eagles also played without their starting quarterback and one of their starting cornerbacks.

Peters had a sprained knee and is expected to have an MRI on Monday, and Bunkley had a hyperextended left elbow. Cole had a hamstring injury.

Joselio Hanson and Dimitri Patterson took on added responsibilities with Asante Samuel out with a concussion. Hanson started at left cornerback, while Patterson filled in on nickel situations.

Patterson got beat early on Michael Crabtree's opening touchdown but recovered to intercept Alex Smith in the second quarter. He was running step-for-step with the speedy Ted Ginn on the play.

Max Jean-Gilles started again at right guard in place of the injured Nick Cole, and tackle King Dunlap was pressed into duty when Peters left the game.

Dunlap promptly gave up a sack, and was pushed back again on another sack that led to a Kevin Kolb fumble.

Antonio Dixon and Darryl Tapp got added time on the defensive line in place of Bunkley and Cole. Dixon notched a sack early in the third quarter. Juqua Parker got his first start of the year, playing defensive end ahead of rookie Brandon Graham.

Trent Cole eventually returned.

On the run

The 49ers came out running - giving the ball to Frank Gore on their first four plays. The Eagles held Gore early, limiting him to 22 yards on 13 first-half carries, bouncing back from a game in which the Redskins ran all over them. The Eagles also forced two Gore fumbles and recovered both. They were the team's first two defensive fumble recoveries of the year.

Hall plays

Chad Hall suited up in place of the injured Riley Cooper for his first NFL game. He was signed from the practice squad as the fourth wide receiver.

He did not get on the field in the first half, but he made the first catch of his career in the third quarter, a 9-yard reception on third and 2.

Out of action

The Eagles inactive players were Samuel (concussion), Michael Vick (rib cartilage tear), Cooper (concussion), Joique Bell, Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, Keenan Clayton, Austin Howard and Clay Harbor.
