Eagles begin revamping defensive staff

The Philadelphia Eagles signaled their intention to rectify their defensive problems with a new look staff following the firing of secondary/cornerbacks coach Johnnie Lynn after only one season.

Lynn's dismissal, confirmed by the team Saturday, was predicted to pave the way for a reshuffling that could see defensive coordinator Juan Castillo reassigned duties following the disappointing 8-8 season.

A source told The Philadelphia Inquirer that Castillo could be in line to replace Lynn, with former Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo possibly brought back as defensive coordinator to resume his working relationship with Andy Reid.

Spagnuolo joined the Eagles staff in Reid's first season as head coach in 1999 before leaving in 2007 to take up the role of defensive coordinator with the New York Giants.

The Giants' victory in Super Bowl XLII helped propel him into the Rams top job, but his three-year stint in St. Louis ended last week after a 10-38 record.

Lynn, himself a former defensive coordinator with the Giants, joined the Eagles after five seasons as secondary coach with the San Francisco 49ers.
