Did Koetter going to Tampa keep Glennon, Martin on roster?

When Dirk Koetter came to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it immediately injected excitement about the direction of the offense into the team. Apparently, the addition of Koetter also gave both quarterback Mike Glennon and running back Doug Martin a chance to remain in Tampa through 2015, according to Scott Reynolds of Pewter Report.

Koetter is apparently high on Glennon, even comparing him to his former quarterback, Matt Ryan.

“I’ve watched Mike from afar – from the other side of the ball here in Atlanta – and from afar, I thought he had some of the same attributes as Matt Ryan,” Koetter told Pewter Report upon his hiring by Tampa Bay in mid-January.

As Reynolds explains, "because Koetter is high on Glennon, he’ll get the chance to develop more rapidly in this new offensive system by splitting first-team reps this offseason – even though he’s destined to be Winston’s backup."

So, what about Martin? You know, the running back who was destined to be on his way out the door this offseason.

“Dirk Koetter, once he started watching tape of all our players, he came away impressed with Doug,” Bucs general manager Jason Licht said. “You saw the tape when he’s healthy, he’s still a very effective runner.”

What this all adds up to for Martin, is that he's in a "prove-it" type scenario, as Reynolds puts it. The team chose not to pick up his fifth-year option, so he'll be in for a season where he's going to need to perform in order to have a shot at remaining in Tampa Bay. For now, though, Koetter wants Martin on the roster and believes that he can play a role in the team's success.
