DE Smith reportedly investigated over child abuse allegation

NFL defensive end Antonio Smith is being investigated for alleged child abuse in Texas.

According to TMZ, Fort Bend County District Attorney John Healey confirmed that Smith is being investigated but no charges have been filed.

“We’re trying to discern the truth from the untruthfulness of the claim to decide what charges, if any, will be filed,” Healey told TMZ.

The accuser reportedly claims that there have been multiple child abuse incidents that date back to 2010. The case was first reported to officials in Colorado in November but was later forwarded to Texas, as that is where the accuser claims the alleged incidents took place.

Smith, 33, signed a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos this offseason. He appeared in all 16 games for the Oakland Raiders last season and earned a trip to the Pro Bowl as a member of the Houston Texans in 2011.

The NFL’s revamped policy on domestic violence calls for a minimum of an automatic six-game suspension for all acts of domestic abuse, which includes child abuse. The league could place Smith on the Commissioner’s Exempt List while the investigation is ongoing.
