Cincinnati Bengals: Jake Kumerow, Tra Carson Headline Practice Squad
Jake Kumerow, for his second straight year, and preseason game four standout Tra Carson were added to the Bengals’ practice squad on Sunday.
The Cincinnati Bengals are one of the deepest teams in football. Their practice squad just made them even deeper with the signing of Jake Kumerow and Tra Carson.
Jake Kumerow, who was an undrafted rookie last season, had a very good training camp for the second straight year, but his performance in the preseason fell short. His three catches for 60 yards against the Indianapolis Colts, made him worth a practice squad position. However, his lack of performance in the other three games pushed him on the outside of a roster spot.
Kumerow was thought by many in training camp to be a front-runner for one of the final wide receiver slots. Cody Core and Alex Erickson had different plans, as Erickson won the return spot and Cody Core came storming out of camp and preseason with an argument to make this team.

Tra Carson, who was signed as an undrafted free agent this year, was another standout in the final preseason game. He finished with 14 runs for 42 yards and three catches for 34 yards. Although it is pretty evident Cincinnati is confident in Jeremy Hill, Giovani Bernard, and Rex Burkhead, Carson brings a security blanket in case someone goes down with an injury.
I think it is safe to say that both of these guys play a vital role on this squad, even if they don’t start on the roster. They are a serious injury away from a roster spot, as we saw with the defensive secondary. It only takes one player going down for the Bengals to need someone to step into that role. Although we want everyone to stay healthy, it helps to know guys like Kumerow and Carson are just a call away.
