Chiefs looking at Jeremy Maclin as their new punt returner?

Kansas City might see Jeremy Maclin as more than just a No. 1 receiver.

According to ESPN's Adam Teicher, Maclin was one of a handful of Chiefs who lined up to practice their punt returns throughout OTAs.

Head coach Andy Reid said his new $55 million receiver lined up to shag punts as a precaution.

"We just want to make sure he is ready,’’ Reid said. “You have limited numbers that you can dress on game day, so you don’t know what rotation you are going to have there with the receivers and returners."

Reid wouldn't call Maclin his top option as a punt returner. And that's very believable for two reasons: the emergence of De'Anthony Thomas as a dangerous return man and the money Kansas City tied up in Maclin this offseason.

But should Thomas struggle in his second season, Reid could turn back to Maclin, his one-time return man with the Philadelphia Eagles.
