Chargers claim quarterback Zach Mettenberger off waivers

One day after he was released by the Tennessee Titans, quarterback Zach Mettenberger was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Chargers.

Mettenberger, a 2014 sixth-round pick, started six games for the Titans in 2014 and four last season but he went 0-10 in those games. He wasn’t in the team’s long-term plans with 2015 No. 2 overall pick Marcus Mariota on board.

New Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt was Tennessee’s head coach when Mettenberger was drafted, and San Diego doesn’t have a clear No. 3 option behind 34-year-old starter Philip Rivers and backup Kellen Clemens.

In 14 NFL games, Mettenberger has completed 208 of 345 passes for 2,347 yards and 12 TDs with 14 interceptions. The former LSU star will battle Mike Bercovici for a spot on the Chargers’ roster.
