Chad Johnson throws his name in the hat for Steelers kicking tryouts

By Matt Birch.

The Pittsburgh Steelers may be in the market for a new kicker, and lucky for them, former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson is available.

With Josh Scobee missing two crucial field goals in the team’s 23-20 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football, it appears he could be out of a job very soon. The Steelers have reportedly scheduled kicker tryouts, and former Redskins kicker Kai Forbath—among others—is slated to show up and make his best case to earn the job.

But he’s not the only one who wants to kick for the team.

Johnson, who spent plenty of time in the AFC North as a member of the Bengals, has thrown his name in the hat. He retweeted a link to a story about the Steelers tryouts, and posted an airplane emoji along with it. That was likely Johnson’s way of saying he would make the trip out to Pittsburgh and give it a shot, if need be.

It may sound crazy at first glance—and probably is—but Johnson did drill an extra point for the Bengals in the past.

The team will likely cut ties with Scobee in the near future, as he’s made only six of 10 kicks he’s attempted this season. Johnson wants the Steelers to know that he’s a viable candidate to come in and compete for the job.
