Cardell Hayes indicted in shooting death of former Saints star Will Smith

A business owner has been indicted on a second-degree murder charge in the fatal shooting of former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith, a grand jury determined Thursday. 

Cardell Hayes also faces a charge of attempted second-degree murder after police said Hayes shot and wounded Smith's wife, Raquel, following a traffic dispute in New Orleans on April 9.

Hayes, who owns a tow truck company, also faces charges of aggravated assault and aggravated damage to property.

Smith, a New York City native and Ohio State alum, played his entire nine-year NFL career with the Saints, including their Super Bowl victory in 2010, before retiring in 2012. He was 34.
