Bucs select Jameis Winston with first overall pick
By Vincent Frank
After weeks of speculation, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have selected former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston with the first overall pick of the 2015 NFL draft.
It’s a move that many expected. It’s also a move that started to be questioned as the draft inched closer.
With Winston now on board, the expectation has to be that Tampa Bay will give him the keys to the offense immediately.
One of the most enigmatic draft prospects in recent NFL history, Winston’s off-field issues are well documented. However, it appears that general manager Jason Licht and company were okay with Winston’s character.
On the field, the former Heisman winner is considered by many a can’t-miss prospect. Taking over for EJ Manuel as Florida State’s starter in 2013, Winston led the squad to a national championship while combining for 44 total touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions. It wasn’t as smooth sailing for Winston this past year. He threw a whopping 18 interceptions en route to displaying mistake-prone tendencies.
With Winston in the fold, Tampa Bay may start to field calls for Mike Glennon. That’s obviously dependent on how the team feels about its first-round pick starting immediately.
