Browns announce the release of troubled WR Davone Bess

Weeks after the Cleveland Browns reportedly planned to void guarantees in Davone Bess’ contract, the team announced its decision to part ways with the seventh-year wide receiver.

Bess, who was arrested after allegedly assaulting an officer at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport in January, was notified of his release along with wide receiver Brian Tyms and linebacker Paul Hazel.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound receiver posted career lows in receptions (42) and yards (362) in 2013. The Browns acquired Bess in a draft-day trade with Dolphins.

During general manager Ray Farmer’s introductory press conference he noted that the team was “concerned for Davone” and that a priority should be placed on him getting the help he needs.

Bess, 28, had a rough upbringing, including a 15-month stint in a juvenile detention center, but he was seen as an inspiration in 2011 when the Dolphins nominated him as a Walter Payton Man of the Year candidate.
