Brock Osweiler and Bill O'Brien reportedly got into a spat following team meeting
While the Houston Texans have gotten off to a decent 3-2 start, their play has been wildly underwhelming, particularly on offense. Brock Osweiler has statistically been one of the worst quarterbacks in the league, completing 58 percent of his passes (27th) while averaging 6.03 yards per attempt (29th).
After signing a lucrative four-year, $72 million contract in the offseason, the Texans certainly expected more out of their quarterback. And despite their winning record, tensions are reportedly boiling in Houston between Osweiler and head coach Bill O’Brien.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Osweiler and O’Brien got into a heated exchange after a team meeting, which was described as a “loud charged interaction after that meeting that did not go unnoticed by others.”
The reported spat stems from a disagreement over play-calling, which O’Brien took over after a few weeks this season. Osweiler has been notorious for his check-downs in Houston, constantly electing to throw to his running backs and underneath receivers.
Could that be the result of O’Brien’s conservative calls? Possibly, but ultimately, Osweiler has the option to make throws downfield, which he hasn’t done. Regardless of who’s at fault for the Texans’ struggles, their issues have to be addressed.
Their 16.4 points per game are tied for last in the NFL, and Osweiler has played a huge role in that. It hasn’t been due to a lack of weapons, either. The Texans surrounded Osweiler with playmakers across the board, from Lamar Miller to Will Fuller to DeAndre Hopkins. He just hasn’t played nearly well enough to pose a threat to any opposing defenses.
