Brandon Marshall on 'typical Rex' captain choice: 'Love it'
Rex Ryan grabbed headlines on Monday when he announced the inevitable: That he's naming IK Enemkpali a captain for Thursday's game against the Jets.
Making his players captains against their former teams is something Ryan's done throughout his career, and Enemkpali's situation didn't cause him to change that. If anything, it made Ryan more likely to make the move.
When Brandon Marshall caught wind of the news, he reacted in a way most wouldn't expect him to.
"Typical Rex," Marshall said via Daniel Popper of the New York Daily News. "That’s a Rex Ryan move. Are you guys surprised? Love it. He has the balls to do it.
"For the most part it’s just football. It’s not a soap opera, it’s not TMZ."
While Marshall may "love" the move, his head coach Todd Bowles didn't take the same stance. Bowles downplayed Ryan's decision and won't let it change anything ahead of Thursday's battle.
"I mean, he coaches his team," Bowles said. "He can name whoever captain he wants."
Of course, Bowles has the opportunity to send a message back at Ryan by naming Geno Smith a captain for the Jets. That hasn't come up just yet, though.
"We haven’t discussed it yet," Bowles said.
Even with all the trash talk and back-and-forth, this matchup between the Bills and Jets has more than just bragging rights on the line. The two will take the field Thursday with second place in the division up for grabs -- something both teams would love to secure.
