Blake Bortles makes the wrong kind of history with illegal forward passes

A pair of illegal forward passes in Jacksonville's 31-25 loss to the San Diego Chargers last Sunday earned Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles a rare, if dubious, distinction.

Per ESPN, Bortles, who threw two passes beyond the line of scrimmage in the loss, became the first player in the last 15 years to have two illegal forward pass penalties accepted against him in a single game. 

Former Houston Texans quarterback David Carr was also flagged for two illegal forward passes in a 2006 game against the New England Patriots, but only one of those penalties was accepted.

A second quarter pass beyond the line of scrimmage wiped out a would-be touchdown pass to wide receiver Allen Robinson, while the Bortles was called for the same infraction in the third quarter.

"I don't know from a coach's perspective what you tell a guy that does that. Quit being an idiot? I don't know," Bortles said. "I've never done that in my life and I did it twice."
