Big Ben: Steelers will keep going for 2-point conversions
By Jesse Reed
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger may have tipped his hand, but it may not matter.
Already 3-for-3 this season on two-point conversions, Roethlisberger told reporters his offense will continue to be aggressive following touchdowns.
“Oh, we’re going to keep doing it,” Roethlisberger said, via ESPN. “We don’t practice it this much to not do it. We practice it every single day. …I tried to tell you guys early on that we would do it, and I think you guys kind of didn’t quite believe it. But it’s something we feel comfortable with.”
This strategy isn’t for everyone, but the Steelers definitely should consider abandoning extra points for a while — at least until the two-point conversions stop working.
Kicker Josh Scobee has already missed an extra point this year, going 4-for-5 this season, and he’s 2-of-4 on field-goal attempts — not exactly comforting numbers. Meanwhile, Big Ben and Pittsburgh’s multi-faceted offense has the look of an unstoppable juggernaut down by the goal line.
The math here is simple: two is greater than one. And, if the Steelers are converting most of their two-point conversions, then why in the world wouldn’t head coach Mike Tomlin continue leaving Roethlisberger on the field following touchdowns?
He’d be crazy to trust Scobee more than Roethlisberger, and as inclement weather becomes more an more of a factor, kicking from 32 yards out will become less and less attractive. The Steelers will continue going for two points after many scores, and it shouldn’t take long for the rest of the league to start trending this way, too.
