Bashaud Breeland and David Amerson make Football Outsiders' worst cornerback list

The game charters and advanced statisticians over at Football Outsiders were not too impressed with the Washington Redskins' starting cornerback duo in 2014. In a recent analysis, they charted cornerbacks by average of adjusted yards per pass and adjusted success rate. They separated the breakdown into cornerbacks in leading roles and cornerbacks in supporting roles--defining tge top cornerback for a team as the one who faced the most targets against opponents' top receivers. Both Bashaud Breeland and David Amerson made the "worst cornerbacks" list.

Breeland was grouped with the leading role cornerbacks, and he finished as the fifth-worst among all 32 cornerbacks who qualified as their team's leading role. They charted Breeland having allowed 8.8 adjusted yards per pass and a 44 percent adjusted success rate. To offer some context, the top leading role cornerback allowed just 5.1 adjusted yards per pass and had a 62 percent adjusted success rate.

Amerson was not much better. He finished as the ninth-worst among cornerbacks who qualified as their team's support role. They charted Amerson having allowed 8.4 adjusted yards per pass and a 39 percent adjusted success rate.

The Redskins added one of the top free agent cornerbacks on the market this offseason in Chris Culliver. Breeland and Amerson will do battle with veteran Deangelo Hall to compete for the starting cornerback job across from Culliver. The Redskins will need at least one of them to take a big step forward if they want to solve their secondary woes.
