Analyst: Raiders' Ponder is one of the NFL's best backups
One NFL analyst thinks the Raiders will be in good hands should Derek Carr need some time off this season.
Christian Ponder is one of the best backups in the league, according to ESPN's John Clayton. He landed at No. 8 in Clayton's list of QB2's.
Wrote Clayton: "Ponder makes the list because he's averaged 23.5 points per game during his starts."
That doesn't tell Ponder's whole story. He moved the ball in Minnesota with Adrian Peterson as the heavy lifter. And he lost the starting gig a season after Peterson's record-breaking 2012.
Still, he's a capable backup who can manage games in Carr's absence. The Raiders could do much worse.
