49ers Sign Six Assistants to Head Coach Kyle Shanahan's Staff

The San Francisco 49ers have been hard at work rounding out head coach Kyle Shanahan’s coaching staff, and the team has officially announced six new members to this all-important group.

Coming off a tough loss in Super Bowl LI, new San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan hasn’t exactly had the biggest amount of time to assemble a dynamic staff of assistants.

And yet this hasn’t stopped him from bringing in some noteworthy positional coaches to the group.

On Friday, the Niners announced six official signings to Shanahan’s staff, via the team’s website.

San Francisco added Jon Embree as tight ends coach and assistant head coach. Prior to joining San Francisco, Embree had spent the last three seasons as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight ends coach. And he served as the Cleveland Browns TE coach back in 2013.

T.C. McCartney was also signed as an offensive assistant. He served this same role under former head coach Jim Tomsula back in 2015 before spending the 2016 season with LSU.

Rich Scangarello is the team’s new quarterbacks coach, who will be tasked with the all-important job of developing a likely rookie quarterback in 2017. He spent 2016 at Wagner College, but Scangarello does have pro-level experience with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015 and the Oakland Raiders in 2009.

Shanahan also brought along Bobby Turner to serve as the Niners new running backs coach, replacing long-time assistant Tom Rathman.

According to Pro Football Talk, Shanahan would like to retain Rathman in another role with the team. Although no clear position has been established just yet.

San Francisco also brought in Ray Wright as the team’s strength and conditioning coach, as well as Nick Kray as Shanahan’s administrative assistant.

Notably absent from Shanahan’s staff is a defensive coordinator, which will be of the utmost importance, considering how San Francisco’s defense ranked dead last in both points and yards allowed last season.

Thankfully, Shanahan and Co. have some time to address this. But not much.
